A Fry's commemorative chocolate tin (empty), produced as a "Souvenir of the Visit of Their Majesties King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra, on the Occasion of the Opening of the Royal Edward Dock, Bristol, July 9th 1908. Edward B James, Lord Mayor", and probably originally presented to local schoolchildren. The tin, which measures approximately 15.5 x 9.6 x 2.2cm (6.1 x 3.8 x 0.85in) when closed, has a hinged lid printed in colour with twin portraits and the Bristol coat of arms, with the name of the manufacturer ("BARCLAY & FRY LTD. LONDON") in tiny letters to the bottom right corner; the remainder of the exterior is finished in gilt, the base being printed with the words "J. S. FRY & SONS, LTD., / CHOCOLATE AND COCOA MANUFACTURERS TO / H.M. THE KING, H.M. THE QUEEN, / & H.R.H. THE PRINCE OF WALES." There is considerable age wear to the exterior including scratching (with several deep scratches), scuffing, marking, tarnish, some loss to the printed finish of the lid, and considerable wear / loss to the gilt finish with some rust spots and patches, whilst the interior is very much tarnished with some rust spots; there are some dents and dings (mainly to the base) together with some splitting to three corners of the base, whilst the edges (especially the base edges) are pushed slightly out of shape in places.
