A Dickinson Carvacraft stamp sponge holder in translucent marbled orange-brown / amber Catalin (cast phenolic), c.1940s, moulded in a distinctively Art Deco shape, measuring approximately 10.3 x 7.8 x 4.2cm (4.05 x 3.05 x 1.65in), with faint and only partly legible Carvacraft stamp to the base. In common with many of these stamp sponge holders, this example has clearly been used as an ashtray, and has therefore suffered burn marks and considerable cracking within and around the well (a small piece of the plastic has chipped away from between two or three of the cracks). The plastic has probably darkened with age and exposure to light, and there are some chips and nibbles to the edges and corners of the base, in addition to general age wear to the surface.
