Diamond Jubilee of Queen Victoria commemorative tea plate (City of Salisbury), 1897
A tea plate produced for the City of Salisbury to commemorate the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Victoria, 1897, and perhaps originally distributed to the children of Salisbury. The basically ordinary off-white glazed plate with narrow dark reddish-brown bands, measuring approximately 19.3cm (7.6in) in diameter, is transfer-printed in dark brown to the centre with a crest, surrounded by the words "CITY OF SALISBURY / 1837 / 1897 / VICTORIA DIAMOND JUBILEE"; the base is stamped "97 / 4", and there is also a small dash of paint in the same colour as the bands. Not being a high-quality piece, there is crazing and discoloration throughout, together with various marks and minor manufacturing irregularities, and the triple stilt marks (normally only seen on the base of a plate) are visible on both sides; there is also some scratching to the surface and age wear to the foot.
