A small "The Crescent Quality (Registd.) Best White Pins" tin, dating from the late 19th or early 20th century, and measuring approximately 3.3 x 4.3 x 1.2cm (1.3 x 1.7 x 0.45in); the tin is stamped "JAHNCKE'S PATENT" to one end, and has a sliding lid which is prevented from sliding completely off the base by means of a pair of pierced triangular indentations. We have been informed that this tin was designed by Ernest Jahncke, a tin box manufacturer who worked closely with match companies including Swan Wax Vestas in the period c.1880-1900, and that this tin was intended for use as a Vesta case or match safe once the original contents had been used up; the triangular indents could be used to spin a match into light. This example, however, still holds a small number of pins, each approximately 2.9cm (1.15in) in length, which remain in good condition apart from slight tarnish. There is considerable age wear including scratching and slight corrosion / rust spotting to the outside of the tin, and most of the gilt lettering and decoration has tarnished and darkened with age, whilst the gilt interior is worn with spots of tarnish.
