A commemorative "Coronation Copescope" (folding periscope), made of printed card with twin glass mirrors, produced as a souvenir of the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II (June 2nd, 1953) by a company called Cope's (probably the tobacco firm, although we are not certain of this as the item makes no mention of tobacco nor of any other product); it would of course have been produced with spectators of the Coronation processions in mind. The periscope, which measures approximately 17.3 x 11.4 x 1.4cm (6.8 x 4.5 x 0.55in) when fully folded and 40.7cm (16in) in length when assembled, is printed with instructions for use, a diagram of "The Royal Route" to be taken by the processions to and from Westminster Abbey, and suggestions for other uses ("It will enable you to get a grandstand view of Horse Racing, Football, Pageants, Speedway Racing..."). The tabs which hold the assembled periscope together are very worn with use (which causes some difficulty in assembly, although it can still hold together), and there is some creasing and slight tearing around the slots into which the tabs fit; the remainder of the card has some discoloration, marking and general age wear including some creasing, wear and bumping to the edges, folds and corners and slight surface loss to one end, whilst there is some old sticky tape (which may or may not be original) to the interior along the centre fold; there is slight spotting, marking and wear to the mirrors.
