A commemorative ceramic mug, produced for William Whiteley's west London department store to mark the Coronation of King George V and Queen Mary on June 22, 1911, in white glaze with ornamental handle, blue-green colour transfer incorporating twin portraits and depictions of "Battleship. George I." and "Dreadnought. George V.", gilt rim and gilt trim to the handle; the base bears no maker's mark, but has a blue-green transfer retailer's stamp with twin globes and the words "TRADE MARK / WILLIAM WHITELEY / UNIVERSAL PROVIDER / WESTBOURNE GROVE / LONDON. W. / REG. NO.", together with a tiny gilt dot. The mug, which measures approximately 8cm (3.15in) in height and 8.2cm (3.25in) in diameter at the top (excluding handle; the top of the mug is not in fact quite truly circular), has some age wear including scratching and abrasion to the surface and wear to the gilt, together with some light brown marking and staining (mainly around the rim and base edges, although there is a small brown stain to the interior) and marking to the foot; there are various imperfections to the transfer, and minor imperfections to the glaze including tiny bumps, occasional pinholes, and some roughness around the rim.
