A commemorative ornamental twin-handled cup by Paragon China, produced in anticipation of the Coronation of King Edward VIII on 12 May 1937 (which did not take place owing to his abdication), measuring approximately 8.7cm (3.45in) in height including handles, 14cm (5.5in) across including handles and 8.3cm (3.25in) in diameter at the top excluding handles. The cup, which is finished in white glaze, is profusely decorated with colour transfers, including the Royal arms to one side and a design incorporating a crown within a wreath surrounded by flags of the Dominions to the other, together with gilt bands to the rim and around the base, whilst the lion-shaped handles have a cream and blue mottled painted finish with orange-red detail; the base bears the following dark brown transfer-printed inscription: "BY APPOINTMENT / A PERPETUAL SOUVENIR / IN PARAGON CHINA / TO COMMEMORATE THE CORONATION OF / H.M. KING EDWARD VIII / CROWNED WESTMINSTER ABBEY / MAY . 12 . 1937 . / REGISTERED & COPYRIGHT / MADE IN ENGLAND". This example unfortunately has a network of hairline cracks to the base and lower sides (visible to the interior, and to a lesser extent to the exterior also), whilst the surface is finely crazed throughout with slight scratching and age wear, some marks (including blue marks matching the colour of the decoration and thus presumably dating from manufacture), slight wear / imperfections to the transfers, slight wear to the gilt and some marking to the foot; there are a few very minor manufacturing imperfections aside from the marks already mentioned. However, in spite of its defects, this remains a lovely display piece!
