An unusual piece of commemorative ware, this handpainted pottery tankard or large mug by Crown Ducal, designed by Charlotte Rhead (although not signed), was produced in anticipation of the Coronation of King Edward VIII on 12 May 1937 (which did not take place owing to his abdication). The tankard, which measures approximately 11.8cm (4.65in) in height and 10.8cm (4.25in) in diameter at the base, has a distinctive textured matt glazed surface with handpainted decoration predominantly in two shades of blue with orange-red and gold detail, with "E VIII R / 1937" to one side; the base bears the black printed "Crown Ducal / Made in / England" stamp together with a red-orange painted code and a small blue painted "J" mark. The surface is crazed throughout with moderate staining to the craze lines, and there is some oxidation / fading to the dark blue painted decoration (especially to the lettering); there are some dark blue spot marks to the interior, together with a few other tiny spot marks, which we believe date from manufacture (the blue being the same shade as the dark blue painted decoration).
