A late Victorian commemorative china cup and saucer, c.1890, decorated with pale pink finish and gilt bands together with a large monochrome transfer portrait of "The Late the Rt. Hon. The Earl of Idd...[?]" to one side of the cup; we believe that the portrait is of Sir Stafford Henry Northcote, 1st Earl of Iddesleigh (1818-87), an eminent Victorian politician of Devon stock, elevated to the peerage in 1885, whose offices included Chancellor of the Exchequer (1874-80) and Foreign Secretary (1886-7). The cup measures approximately 7cm (2.75in) in height and 7.4cm (2.9in) in diameter at the top, whilst the saucer measures approximately 14cm (5.5in) in diameter; neither bear any maker's marks. There is considerable age wear to the pink finish, especially to that of the cup (which is in fact almost white with pink areas), whilst that of the saucer has a mottled appearance, and there is some wear to the gilt and transfer; both cup and saucer show some wear (including scratching) to the surface and marking to the feet, together with various manufacturing imperfections.
