"Letters on the Improvement of the Mind, by Mrs. Chapone, and A Father's Legacy to his Daughters, by the late Dr. Gregory" (London, "Published by Suttaby, Evance & Fox, Stationer's Court, & Baldwin, Cradock & Joy, Paternoster Row", 1820). Small hardcover (original binding with tooled gilt decoration to spine, gilt borders to covers, tooled pattern to board edges, marbling to inside covers / flyleaves and page edges), 194pp including engraved title page / frontispiece and "Life of Mrs. Chapone", measuring approximately 7.3 x 13 x 1.6cm (2.85 x 5.1 x 0.65in). Mrs. Chapone's work, "written for the private instruction of her favourite niece" and first published in 1773, dispenses advice to young women on such subjects as "the Study of the Holy Scriptures", "the Regulation of the Heart and Affections", "Politeness and Accomplishments" and "Reading History"; the late Dr. John Gregory of Edinburgh writes about similar subjects in a comparable vein. No dustjacket; there is considerable age wear to the cover including much scratching and scuffing to the boards, splitting and slight loss to the top of the spine and wear to the edges, together with various marks; there is considerable discoloration and marking to the pages (including some foxing to the end pages) with edge and corner wear, some corner creases, and slight loss to the top left corner of the frontispiece / title page, whilst the rear endpaper bears the name of an early owner, written upside-down in ink; the text block is coming loose from the binding at the front of the volume, but is still holding in place.
