A c.1920s vintage Carlton Ware (Wiltshaw and Robinson) tea-for-two set, consisting of two cups and saucers, two tea plates, a small teapot, milk jug and sugar bowl, in blue metallic glaze with gilt rims, with contrasting orange lustre interior to the cups, jug and bowl. Each piece (apart from the teapot lid) bears the black printed swallow and crown mark ("W & R / STOKE ON TRENT / CARLTON WARE / MADE IN ENGLAND") as used c.1920-26 - except for the saucers and one cup, which have a similar mark omitting the word "Ware" - together with various painted marks. The plates each measure approximately 14.8cm (5.85in) in diameter, and the cups approximately 6.1cm (2.4in) in height and 7.6cm (3in) in diameter excluding handles, whilst the teapot measures approximately 18cm (7.1in) in overall length including handle and spout. There are varying degrees of crazing to nearly all of the pieces, both saucers being finely crazed throughout, whilst there are various imperfections in the glaze including some unevenness, spot marks and occasional pinholes; one plate has some small green bumps to the surface, which appear to be (but may not be) in the glaze; one of the saucers has a hairline crack about 3cm (1.2in) in length, whilst one cup has a crack all the way around the handle near the lower joint with a small adjacent chip, although this appears to be a manufacturing defect as the chip is covered by the glaze; there is some surface wear including scratching and abrasion to all pieces, with considerable wear to the finish of one plate, together with occasional spots of loss to the gilt.
