Carlton Ware (W & R) blue and gilt teapot, c.1920s

An elegant Carlton Ware (Wiltshaw and Robinson) teapot of c.1920s vintage, in blue with gilt handle, knop and rims, measuring approximately 11cm (4.35in) in height including knop and 18cm (7.1in) across from end of handle to tip of spout.  The base is marked with the black printed swallow and crown mark ("W & R / STOKE ON TRENT / CARLTON WARE / MADE IN ENGLAND") as used c.1920-26, together with a small gilt mark, although there is no pattern number.  The outer surface is finely crazed throughout with age wear including some scratches, slight scuffs and some wear to the gilt; there are a few craze lines to the external base together with age wear / marking to the foot, whilst there are various brown stains and areas of crazing (with some staining) to the interior.  There are one or two tiny pinholes in the glaze together with slight roughness to the inner edge of the lid, whilst there is some variation in the appearance of the blue glaze (as is typical of Carlton Ware of this variety and period).
