A heavy pottery match holder / striker advertising "Club Matches", c.1900, measuring approximately 7.3cm (2.85in) in height and 10.2cm (4in) in diameter at the base, with off-white glazed match-holding well and surround, rough textured glazed surface (for striking) to sides, and unglazed base printed with the words "WITH / BRYANT & MAY'S / Compliments". Although there are no maker's marks, this piece may have been produced by Wiltshaw & Robinson (Carlton Ware), as we have seen a very similar piece (advertising other matches in Bryant & May's range) bearing the Carlton Ware swallow stamp instead of the Bryant & May mark. The well and its surround are finely crazed throughout with considerable grey staining and other marks, together with considerable surface wear including scratching and abrasion, whilst there are some short vertical hairline cracks around the edge of the opening; there is some marking, staining and general age wear to the remainder of the surface, and especially to the base.
