Brownfield "Palmyra" round blue and white pottery strainer, c.1870s

A William Brownfield & Sons (Cobridge, Staffordshire) "Palmyra" round blue and white pottery strainer, c.1870s, with central scene with buildings, trees, figures and a distant sailboat surrounded by a border incorporating oak leaves.  The strainer, which measures approximately 16.9cm (6.65in) in diameter and 1cm (0.4in) deep, bears a blue printed "Palmyra" mark to the base together with the impressed marks "BROWNFIELD" and "3/76" (which may indicate a manufacturing date of March 1876).  The piece is in poor condition with a large chip (about 1.6 x 1.6cm / 0.65 x 0.65in) to the edge of the upper surface together with considerable brown staining, scratching and surface wear, whilst there is crazing to much of the underside plus the odd crazed patch to the upper surface; there are various imperfections in the glaze including spot marks, pinholes and numerous tiny bumps.
