A Brentleigh Ware "Salford" pottery vase, c.1930s-40s, with Art Deco-style fins to the lower half, in matt blue painted finish with handpainted daisies to the exterior, and matt black painted finish to the interior, measuring approximately 13.9cm (5.45in) in height and 9.3cm (3.65in) in diameter at the top; the base is marked with the impressed stamp "MADE IN ENGLAND / BRENTLEIGH WARE / SALFORD" together with an incised "SS" or "55", a small painted "D" and the original price (5/11) in pencil. Pieces of this kind were cheaply produced and sold when new, and were not intended to be especially durable; this example, which is of fairly poor quality with various blemishes in the moulding and finish including small lumps and pinholes, shows considerable wear to the interior finish and to the foot, whilst the exterior shows some lesser wear as well as considerable marking / greying; there is also a hairline crack at the top which extends about 2.2cm (0.85in) on the inside, but only 4mm (0.15in) on the outside.
