A box of eleven vintage Christmas crackers of two kinds, c.1940s-50s, in a box for "Speedway Crackers" by Davies & Ratcliffe. The box, which measures approximately 41.3 x 23.5 x 4.6cm (16.25 x 9.25 x 1.8in), has a board for the motorcycle racing game of "Speeday" printed on the lid label, and still holds five of what we believe to be the original "Speedway Crackers" (in pink crepe paper, each approximately 22cm / 8.65in long) together with explanation and instruction sheets for the game of "Speeday", four metal bike-shaped game pieces, one plastic die, five score cards and a gilt metal thistle charm (in addition to any that may remain inside the crackers); the six remaining crackers (in red crepe paper with paper and foil decoration) are of similar size and of similar or slightly later vintage. The box is worn, marked, discoloured and somewhat crushed with some splitting to edges; the crackers are likewise somewhat crushed and misshapen with some water stains to the red crackers and surface corrosion to the foil paper decorations; the instructions and score cards are discoloured with some age wear, whilst there is some tarnish to the metal game counters.
