A Booths Silicon China "The Allies A.D. 1914" mug, produced to commemorate the start of the Great War, in white with hand-coloured transfer decoration depicting representative flag-bearing soldiers from Japan, Servia, Russia, India, Belgium, Britain, France and the Colonies together with a small transfer to the interior and gilt trim and embellishment to the handle. (The French soldier is missing one of his feet - we doubt that this omission was intentional!) The mug, which measures approximately 9.4cm (3.7in) in height and 8.2cm (3.25in) in diameter at the base, is marked to the base with the green printed stamp "BOOTHS / [crown] / SILICON CHINA / ENGLAND / REG.NO.644362" together with a small red painted mark. Much of the exterior is crazed, as is the whole of the interior, and there is some wear to the decoration including fading / oxidation and slight loss to the handpainted areas, and slight wear to the gilt together with age wear including scratching to the glaze; there are some nibbles to the base edge, some or all of which evidently date from manufacture, together with other minor manufacturing imperfections.
