A Second Boer War (1899-1902) commemorative ornamental pot or sugar bowl (with frilled edge and fluted sides) by Foley China, measuring approximately 6.5cm (2.55in) in height and 10.2cm (4in) across at the top (maximum - the shape is somewhat irregular). The pot, which is finished in white glaze with gilt rim, is decorated to one side with a large hand-coloured transfer featuring a small portrait of a general representing "The Army" (we believe this to be Lord Roberts) in the centre of a representation of the Victoria Cross upon an Union Jack shield with crowned lion above, with soldiers on either side representing "Colonies, Supporters of the Empire, Volunteers", and to the other side with a smaller hand-coloured transfer of a wreath with crown, containing the surnames of six Boer War heroes: "ROBERTS / BULLER / KITCHENER / WHITE / BADEN POWELL / FRENCH"; the base bears a green printed "THE FOLEY CHINA / ENGLAND" crown and monogram mark, together with a black printed registration number (not quite fully present) and a small gilt "X". This example unfortunately has three vertical or near-vertical hairline cracks, the longest (to the left of the main transfer) measuring approximately 3.8cm (1.5in) in length with an adjacent chip at its top, together with slight to moderate age wear including a few scratches to the surface, some wear and imperfections to the transfers, slight wear to the gilt and marking to the foot; there are also various manufacturing imperfections including some spot marks, pinholes, and numerous tiny bumps in the glaze. This nevertheless remains an unusual and scarce commemorative item which would make an interesting display piece.
