A pottery match holder / striker advertising Apollinaris mineral waters, c.1900, measuring approximately 7.6cm (3in) in height, 5.8cm (2.3in) in diameter at the top and 11.6cm (4.55in) in diameter at the base. The exterior has a deep blue and green marbled glazed finish with a round rough section for striking (non-safety) matches, and bears the name "APOLLINARIS" in raised applied lettering twice around the rim of the match holder, together with the slogan "Apollinaris THE QUEEN OF TABLE WATERS" (with red triangle trademark) twice around the base in similar applied lettering; the underside, which is somewhat roughly glazed in white, bears the black printed stamp "HODAN & WELLINGS, / LONDON." The glaze is finely crazed throughout, with some scratching, marking and age wear, and there is some age wear to the foot; there is considerable marking and slight chipping to the applied lettering, some of which is crossed by lines or cracks which appear to follow the lines of crazing in the surrounding glaze.
