description

An antique treen stereoscope / stereoscopic viewer, dating from around 1900, in part-varnished dark wood (the eyepiece being made from three thin layers of bent wood glued together) with glass lenses and metal fixings, together with a large collection of assorted stereoviews.  The collection of views comprises 68 viewcards (typically measuring about 17.8 x 8.8cm / 7 x 3.45in each) plus a large quantity of monochrome views printed on paper (taken from magazines, and mostly double-sided), all stored together in an old and lidless cigar box; the cards are a complete mixture, both in terms of origin (British, European and American) and subject matter (including landscapes, natural history, buildings and tableaux vivants), and are mostly in black and white or sepia although there are a few coloured examples including two French "Scenes Animees" translucent tissue views.  The viewer, which measures approximately 33cm (13in) in overall length with the eyepiece measuring approximately 13.4 x 8cm (5.3 x 3.15in), has some wear commensurate with its age including marking, scratching and scuffing to the wood, slight delamination to the edge of the eyepiece with some old chipping to the outer layer, and tarnish, rust and/or corrosion to the metal fittings, whilst there is some accumulated dirt to the edges (and especially the corners) of the lenses; there is considerable age wear and marking to the cards with varying degrees of fading to the views, whilst the box they are stored in is very worn and marked with a few old worm or beetle holes.
