Alice Molony, "Lion's Crouch", illustrated by the author (London, Faber and Faber Ltd., 1944). Hardback, 136pp, measuring approximately 13.5 x 20.6cm (5.3 x 8.1in), published "in complete conformity with the authorised economy standards" of the Second World War. The story (probably intended for children, and presumably fictional), which is set in the Cornwall of that era, and in which horses and ponies feature heavily, describes how the nefarious activities of a group of smugglers and fifth-columnists were frustrated with the help of the young female narrator's pet bull-terrier; the numerous black and white illustrations nearly all feature the animals of the story. The cover shows considerable wear, including tearing at the spine, marking, and bumping to edges and corners, and a fairly modern plastic library ticket pouch has been glued to the inside cover; the pages have yellowed considerably, and have occasional creases and marks, whilst the page edges are somewhat roughly cut.
