A pair of ornamental souvenir china pepperpots in the form of a pair of binoculars, dating from the late 19th or early 20th century, and measuring approximately 7.1cm (2.8in) tall including lids, 11cm (4.35in) long and 4.5cm (1.75in) wide at the base. The exterior of the set (except the base, which is unglazed with a black printed "FOREIGN" circular stamp) is decorated in a lustrous pearlised glaze with a large amount of gilt to simulate the metal parts of a pair of binoculars; one side bears the words "A Present from Rothesay", the other has two coloured transfer scenes of "Rothesay Castle" and "The Pier, Rothesay". These pepperpots are strictly ornamental - not only are they permanently conjoined, but the pierced lids are very loose and would fall out if the set were held upside down! Part of the inside of one of the lids has broken away, with a short associated crack; there are a couple of spots of paint and some other marks to the exterior, together with some wear to the gilt and transfers, a few light surface scratches, and some age wear and marking to the base; there are also numerous small manufacturing irregularities.
